Week IX

Monday 19: First thing today was making the journal post for last week, I didn't do anything that Sunday and that's usually when I do them. Nothing special here just the routine journal post. Then after that I prepared for my UAL interview and did that. It was short but very straight to the point, no questions that really caught me off guard this time around. I was happy with it. Then I just got on with the actual project and progressing that. I have all the ideas sketching now it was important to model a few I thought. The main reason why I really wanted to do that was because I knew my sampling was never enough in my previous projects, but now that I have triple the time I had for those projects it was important that this stage had a lot to show. The criteria state that my development stage is very important, and that every thing should inform the next steps, and I think modelling my sketches is a great to demonstrate that. For the first time the decision I make for the final design will be based on 3D models, which is how it should be really.

Tuesday 20: Today was just more of the Lego modelling, picturing that, demolish the model and rinse and repeat. Nothing really that stands out and I feel I need to talk about today other that I'm really thankful to have these Legos with me. They are perfect for what I'm doing, who would of thought a Lego set from so long ago would be so useful now.

Wednesday 21: Easter break is over, it was back to school today, did the home test then got to school. Today was the hand in day for this part of the project, and disappointingly I fell short, my development stage was not done in time so It'll have to go over the time. However I do have to say I feel like I am at point with it where it will all go quite fast, and that once I complete it will be a very strong section in my project and will inform the rest very well. So even though it will be finished at a late stage I don't think it will hinder my project much on the contrary. All it means is that I have no other choice but work very hard for these last 3 weeks. Today we also received the final brief for this project, and so I'll make the usual blog post on that and my thoughts. This time around my guesses for which architect's work would be on the brief was wrong. There's a maquette on it, but I do not know who it is from. Whilst I was at school I did also get a few new ideas for the designs, so I sketched those, and modelled two of them when I got home. I now have 4 models which is really good I think, they're all photographed so I'll have to go through all the photos for the blog.

Thursday 22: This morning before going in to school I was thinking about the photos I have of my models, looking over at them, and a few may be deemed as abstract, because of the number of pieces I have, I have to scale them down and some details are lost, for example the windows and interior, so I thought a good idea would be to sketch those in. So when I was at school I selected a few photos for each model and printed those out. Today I also had my first go on the laser cutter which was a lot of fun, I made a box, which a container to me at least, and it has a triangular cut out. Talking about containers, I was looking at models recently and came across Sou Fujimoto and a model he made with staples and it reminded me a lot of container city. Going back to the laser cutting I did go simple, because the main goal here was just to learn the process so that I could take what I learn and apply it for the actual model. Even on this small exercise I managed to make mistakes, one of the line I drew was too long and didn't connect with the other lines to form the shape perfectly. So I'm glad I did have a trial run on it before, because now I'll be extra cautious. On my way home I picked up the wood for the model, and once I got back home I modelled one final sketch so now I have a total of 5.

Friday 23: I got into school and printed the photos of that last model I made yesterday. So now I have all the sketches to the 11 ideas, and models to go alongside 5 of them. The main thing I focused on today in school was making the blog post where I showed my 11 ideas. That took me the whole time in school, because I chose to talk about each design individually, explain my thinking and what I was trying to achieve with each design. I also briefly touched upon which design I liked and which of them I would like to develop further. Got home and started sketching over the models, I'm really liking the way it comes out so far, it really elevates the models, and you are able to understand them. The Lego set that came with all the white Lego pieces I'm using also came with a book, and in that book they also draw over the models to make them stand out more and add people, they don't add interiors though. I find the drawings I've made pretty cool drawings, kind of mixed media. I'm not the best drawer, but because I'm just drawing over models, I don't have to worry too much about perspective, and can go a bit crazy. The few that I did turned out great, and another reason I'm happy with them, was that previously I had been told that I should make more artistic visuals for my ideas instead of just the screenshots off Sketchup that are a lot colder. I think those drawing tick that box.

Saturday 24: I finished drawing over the remaining models I had, scanned those and compiled all of that into blog posts. I decided to have one blog post that would encompass the whole objective and thinking behind the models, and then have a separate blog post for each model, because I didn't want to have super long blog post that you scroll through endlessly. Again those blog posts took a while, and so it was all I done for today.

Sunday 25: Today I decided to get all the remaining draft blog post and finish them. What I usually do is get the tittle for each blog post the day I do it, and then put that into my drafts so it serves as a kind of checklist. So today the goal was to check all those off. There were four in total, I got through three of them, this week's journal post was the only one I didn't get around finishing. I published my sliding door idea, which was the last blog post for the development stage. I'm pleased to have finished that development stage now, it came 4 days late which is okay, not ideal but okay, the bright side was that in those 4 days I did get a lot of great work done, worked that progressed my project immensely. The other two blog post were about the part three of the brief and the laser cutter. after that journal post I will have no outstanding blog posts to make, so I can solely focus on making that final idea in Sketchup and turning it into a net for my maquette. So just fun things ahead. I haven't been on Sketchup once this project, which has been 9 weeks, and I thought it would be very tough but it had been okay. I have been able to produce work that I am happy without Sketchup and have reached a point in my project that would usually be dictated by what I have been doing on Sketchup but this time around that's not the case, and I think it has been for the better. Yes this project is longer which means I have more time to produce work, like models, but I could've chosen to carry out the project like I normally do, and overlook the sampling stage which would've weaken the project. Today I also discovered UNSTUDIO, and their work is pretty fantastic.
