Thoughts on the research

I was really happy with the research I carried out on the 6 artists. Being that this project is a lot longer than the previous one, I had the opportunity to do more in-depth research, research into architects and artists as a whole not just one of their projects. One reason why I think this went well is the obvious, I learnt a lot, discovered new things. What I cherish most from my research was this understanding of how these artists work. Right from the beginning I had say I didn’t want to research artists just for their innovative designs and do my take on it. I wanted to understand how their concepts, philosophy and way of creating work helped them achieve those innovative pieces. If I want to be innovative in any way, I cannot just take an innovative design and have it be the base of my concept. I feel like in the end I did gain a good understanding of their concepts and that will allow me I think to carry a better project and make better designs. Another reason why I think this went well is that not only did I learn a lot, but I was exposed to a whole lot of new things I do not yet understand, this research will allow for even further research for example I want to research into the “pure geometry” of Tadao Ando, and the “platonic geometry” that I saw when researching Louis Kahn. Just like Aristotle said, “the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know” and I don’t know much right now so plenty more research will be coming. This is also another reason why I really like the research I did, because I didn’t just learn things related to my projects, the knowledge I gain can and will inform a lot more than just this project, these concepts and theories I learn will be things I’ll use in university and even beyond that. One thing that can be seen as a downside in my research is the choice to research artists that are not related to my field, but I would argue that on the other hand it is actually a very good thing. Approaching it more holistically gives me the chance to understand how these other innovative artists worked, the materials, shapes and processes they use are not applicable to my field, I can’t build a house out of suede and mesh, but their thinking can be applied to my project. I choose to use my everyday experiences like Tinker, to act instinctively like the Eames and not be afraid to go out of the lines like Richard, not necessarily have a pink building, or maybe, Ricardo Bofill did it, and it’s on of my favourite buildings.
