In my mind map, I had mentioned that I though sliding doors would be very key in saving space, for these small rooms. I then went on to develop an idea that would incorporate storage into that sliding door idea to make use of the space even more. I sketched that, and decided to also model it, mainly because the drawings might be a bit confusing. After having drawn over my models for the building's design I also decided to do the same for the door model, just to really put it in context.
So this is it, with the real thing, the door would not have slit, it would be solid, no gaps, those gaps are there just because of how I built it. Overall I'm very happy with this idea , and I think it's quite smart in the way it uses space, you could even go further and have the left post be storage, and the some of th door be storage as well, the part the is not hollow at least. Looking at the idea I do see flaws and areas that could be improved, and I'm thinking that maybe it is overcomplicating it for nothing. One thing that I am not a huge fan of is that the door isn't flush with the wall and protrudes, and has to in order for the design to work. A solution to that would be for the door, when open to actually go into the wall, but it would therefore also go into the storage unit, which means the person couldn't put his objects in that pathway. Now if that pathway is only at the back then it's not a huge problem, but only having the door be one sided means that from the inside the room you would have a hole which isn't nice. I think I prefer having it protrude then having it go through the storage unit, or it be only one sided, at the end of the day if I approach it smartly enough the protruding panels could be distinctive features that enhance the space. From the inside the room it could be a mirror, or like a magnetic board (not my idea, an idea I saw on the "Never too small" channel the "Rattan in concrete jungle" episode). From the outside the protruding panels could help create variety in the corridor, if say these panels had a distinct pattern, or just a different material, it would help break up the space and make it more visually interesting. All of this to say that the downsides could be turned into positives, but I want to go through with the idea of the sliding door, maybe not this one, but I'm liking this one so far, I also don't have any other particular new ideas in terms of the sliding door. The final issue I had was I didn't know whether a sliding door could be locked, I've never seen a sliding door be used as the main entrance door, and I was wondering if that was because it couldn't be locked. Each room needs to be secure so the doors need to be able to lock, but anyway I was very pleased to find that they could be locked.
