The first task was to pick 3 innovations, from 3 time periods and just start drawing. The time periods were: within your life (2002 - now), last 50 years, last 100 years. I actually quite enjoy doing this type of task, it may not directly form the project or the design but it's a task where I can be very expressive and instinctive, and who knows I might create something that really inspires the design later down the road. In the peg project I had to do the same, and I ended up with a couple of interesting shapes, angles and views in the drawings and photographs.
100 years - The Microphone
The one on the left is just in pencil then pen to go over it, the main focus here was just on the mark making. On the right there is a quick timed pencil drawing, the middle is a continuous line drawing and on the right is another timed drawing but in pen this time. I picked the microphone because I think there's a real class with the old school one especially. I really like the mic on the left, that reminds me of the old school boxing matches where the mic would drop down for the announcer.
50 years - Darth Vader
I'm a fan of Star Wars, but an even bigger fan of their masks and most specifically Darth Vader's mask. I believe it to be the single greatest mask ever designed for the big screen maybe even the greatest mask ever, but that would be an ill-informed statement because there is bound to be an old mask tucked away somewhere on this globe. I think it imposes itself like no other.; the creases and strong shapes that are created are simply astonishing I find, it couldn't be any better, and I don't think It'll ever be dethroned for me. All three of the drawings on the left are just quick timed drawings overlapped. On the rights it's a mixture, bottom left pink one is eyes closed. Blue and green were both done with my left hand whilst the white and yellow were done as continuous line drawings.
Lifetime - Bluetooth Headphones/ Earphones
For something in my lifetime, it was only fitting that I chose something I use often, and have in physical, to get primary/observational drawings. Both drawings on the left were done in pen, with the focus of recreating those lovely, bold expressive curves present in the earphones. The drawing on the right was done with a thick marker, and I just wanted to experience with changing the thickness of lines, whilst focusing again on those curved lines. Being that I had this object in physical I took the opportunity and collected all the headphones around the house and just experienced with it, placing them in ever-changing ways in hopes to get something interesting. I'm quite lucky because I think all 4 headphones/ earphones have a very distinct character and mixing them was a lot of fun. The Nuras ( metal/silicon pair) are not ambitious in design apart from the in ear aspect, it is a classical rounded design that you'd expect, whilst the B earphones and Parrot ( ivory headphones) offer more unorthodox, ambitious lines. The ivory pair of headphones are designed by Philippe Starck I think they're the nicest, sleekest pair of headphones I've seen. The last plasticky pair is bland, but the fact that it folds brings a new perspective and new angles.
All in all I really enjoyed this little task. Regardless of wether or not what was created will inspire something later down the line; it was interesting and a lot of fun, and there was no need to think beyond, just a question of being expressive, free of restrictions which I really love.
