I really liked my bare concrete, but I changed it because it didn't fit the project. I however do not like the idea of just having sheets of I don't know what be the facade of my installation. It would lack the character that was previously present with the concrete. So what I was thinking is create a pattern that would make the facades, like a wallpaper maybe something that was popularly made during the arts and craft movement. I though the pattern could be inspired by the Arts & deco movement. The Structure starts of as something inspired by the arts and craft movement, then more organic lines are brought in as node to the art nouvelle movement, and now a pattern that feels art and deco. Full circle really.
Pattern 1:
Pattern 2:
Pattern 3:
I'm really happy with the way the patterns turned out. All three patterns are just the old school logo mirrored, rotated and repeated in various ways. I used the same initial colour scheme on all 3 so that they could be put side to side and be compared, and the colour scheme was not the deciding factor. Saying that I think my favourite is #2 and the one I will go with. I think it has the best composition and has empty spaces that allow for breath, whereas the other 2 are a bit more aggressive and in your face. When creating the final pattern I will more likely go with more yellows because I think it has a few connotations to what my college life is like. For one during the pandemic each department had their "bubble" which essentially just meant that each department had to stay with one another. These bubbles were made visually explicit by having each department wear a different coloured strap for their ID card, that is to be worn at all times. The art department has yellow. The second reason is that the pattern is inspired by Arts and Deco, during that time everything from buildings, patterns, interiors and furniture boasted gold accents, so will my pattern just not a classic shiny gold. And Final reason is that in my 2 years in college I don't recall having seen numerous people wearing yellow clothes, where on the other hand I can frequently be seen in my yellow hoodie, maybe sometimes even with a yellow t-shirt underneath. Adding a pattern with colours is also a way to meet the feedback I had received from a lot of people saying that they would like to see something colourful.
